Open to all ages, the nine graded exams will test all aspects of Musical Theatre performance

Mountview Academy for Theatre Arts has announced a series of brand-new graded exams which incorporate the many facets to be expected from any Musical Theatre performer: singing, acting and dancing, as well as the ability to curate a programme and subsequently reflect on it.

There are no age requirements and no prescribed repertoire lists – students may perform published material or their own writing and compositions. Exams can be taken at Mountview Academy in Peckham, London or at various venues across the UK and abroad. Examiners are industry trained professionals and practitioners.

There are a total of nine qualifications from Grades 1 to 8 and a preliminary preview certificate, Grades 1-3 each being the equivalent of a GCSE Grade 1-3, Grades 4 to 5 being the equivalent of a GCSE Grade 4-9 and Grades 6 to 8 being comparable to an AS/A-Level. Grades 6 to 8 are also awarded UCAS points.

Mountview described the exams as ‘designed to develop both the imaginative range and technical skillset of the Musical Theatre performer’. It continued: ‘These graded qualifications bring new ways to consider material and make connections across disciplines. Performers at all levels of experience are invited to have total creative agency of their work and to be the originators of their performances, with a syllabus that rewards curiosity and uniqueness.’
