The National Theatre's ongoing takeover of the West End shifts towards the realm of musicals with Standing at the Sky's Edge, which won the top prize at the Olivier Awards last spring and now has moved across town for a commercial run, with Broadway in its sights.
That's a tall order for a show more deeply rooted in England, and Englishness, than any local musical since Blood Brothers. To its benefit this Richard Hawley/Chris Bush hymn to their native Sheffield benefits from a sense both of occasion and celebration - not to mention the most invigorating new homegrown Musical Theatre score that London has heard in an age.
